Doo a Makongo, recorded by Europeans as "George" or "Joss," was a leader of the Duala people of modern-day Cameroon, who was the first member of his people to be called a "King" (borrowed into the Duala language as "Kine"). He belonged to the Bonanjo lineage/village, & was regarded as the "senior chief" of his generation. He had two sons, the first being Priso a Doo, whose name is believed to have been a rendering of the English word "Prince," in keeping with the the title bestowed upon him by English merchants. His second son, Bele (or "Bell" to Europeans) was not his, but adopted by him after he was said to have seized his mother (a member of the Mungo people) in payment for a debt. Although custom would have had him be succeeded by Priso, while dying he is said to have declared Bele his successor because Priso was too violent (& in some accounts had specifically attacked European merchants). Priso is said to have been overthrown around 1792, & it is guessed that Doo might have died around the same time or shortly thereafter.[1][2][3]
